Los Angeles was founded in 1781 by the Spanish. It became part of Mexico in 1821. It was repurchased from Mexico in 1848 at the end of the Mexican-American War. Los Angeles was incorporated as a municipality in 1850.

Los Angeles has a diverse economy spanning many industrial sectors. International trade, entertainment, aerospace, technology, petroleum, fashion, and tourism are among the leading industries. The ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach combine to form the fifth largest port in the world.

Tourism and conventions are also huge industries for Los Angeles. The city draws over 25 million visitors annually.

Los Angeles has a very moderate climate year round. Summer daily high temperatures are normally in the mid-70's (°F). Winter daily high temperatures are normally in the mid-60's (°F). The city has abundant sunshine with 263 days of sun per year and only 35 days with measurable precipitation.

Los Angeles has many scenic attractions and landmarks. Beaches are major attraction in the area with some, such as Venice Beach, boasting international fame. There are many theme and entertainment parks in the vicinity, including world famous Disneyland, Universal Studios Hollywood, Six Flags Magic Mountain, and various motion picture studios. Areas like Beverly Hills and Santa Monica are also major tourist destinations.

Los Angeles is an international, multi-cultural city with people settling there from all over the world. About 55% of the population is white / caucasian and about 10% are Asian. Hispanics of any race make up about 40$ of the population. English is the most widely spoken language with Spanish also very common.
